On the occasion of 8th National Handloom Day, the High Commission of India, London along with the Handloom Export Promotion Council of India organised a special event in London - ‘Land of Woven Dreams’. It is a thematic exhibition on India’s 75 years of Independence - ‘Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav’. 

The event was launched at a ceremony held in the India House, High Commission of India on August 6, 2022. Acting High Commissioner H.E. Mr. Sujit Ghosh inaugurated the event with his address, where he spoke about the rich heritage of Indian handlooms and its positive impact on India’s economy. Thereafter, the panellists Ms. Susan Thomas (Director, National Institute of Fashion Technology, Bengaluru), Ms. Vaishali S (Couture Designer from India), Prof. Eiluned Edwards (Professor, School of Art and Design, Nottingham University) and Ms. Elizabeth Ashdown (Associate Lecturer, Central St. Martins College) deliberated on the ‘Role and Relevance of Handlooms in the future of Fashion Industry’. They discussed about the importance of preserving handloom traditions, their evolution over time and their contribution to sustainable fashion. A thematic dance performance by Sanskriti Institute and a flute recital followed. The participants also had the opportunity to watch a live weaving demo and glimpses of handloom displays curated by National Institute of Fashion Technology, Bengaluru. 

The exhibition continues on August 7-8, 2022 at the Hotel Montcalm, 2 Wallenberg Pl, London W1H 7TN.
