India reception during Labour Party Conference-2018

High Commissioner Mr. Y.K. Sinha and the Labour Friends of India (LFIN) hosted a reception on the sidelines of Labour Party Conference-2018 in Liverpool on September 26, 2018.

The Reception was attended by senior shadow cabinet ministers, Members of Parliament and councillors from the Labour Party. Among those present were Shadow Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs- Ms. Emily Thornberry, Shadow Secretary of State for International Trade- Mr. Barry Gardiner, Shadow Secretary of State for Health and Public Care Mr. Jon Ashworth, Shadow Attorney General for England and Wales- the Baroness Shami Chakrabarti, Shadow Minister for Public Health- Ms. Sharon Hodgson, Shadow Minister for Scotland- Mr. Paul Sweeney, and several other U.K. Labour Party Parliamentarians.

Mr. Barry Gardiner, the Chairperson of the LFIN, introduced the two new co-chairs of the LFIN- Mr. Darren Jones, MP and Mr Rajesh Agrawal, Deputy Mayor of London for Business. Mr Gardiner commended the tremendous work that went into cultivating India’s ties with the Labour Party in the past year and spoke of the need to strengthen India’s ties with its diaspora in the U.K.

Shadow Foreign Secretary Ms. Emily Thornberry spoke of the many contributions that High Commissioner has made to strengthening India-U.K. ties in his tenure. She emphasised that U.K. shares many of its core values with India- the world’s biggest democracy, and that both countries need to work closely together to meet global challenges of the future.

High Commissioner Mr. Y.K. Sinha welcomed all friends of India to the Reception and spoke of the deep historic relationship that India has enjoyed with Labour Party since its independence, and expressed his confidence that India will continue to play the role of a strategic partner to the U.K. even when it exits the EU.
