India-UK Meeting

The 12th India-UK Joint Economic and Trade Committee (JETCO) meeting was held in London on 11th January, 2018. The Indian delegation was led by Hon’ble Commerce & Industry Minister (CIM), and the UK side was led by the Rt. Honourable Dr. Liam Fox MP, Secretary of State for International Trade. Hon’ble CIM had a separate bilateral meeting with Secretary of State where detailed discussions were held on trade and investment issues.

2. To strengthen the long-standing relationship, India-UK JETCO was established on 13th January, 2005. At the 12th meeting, both India and the UK welcomed the strong economic performance of both the countries and the opportunities this presents for business to boost trade and investment. The JETCO provides a platform for both the countries to discuss trade related issues and to strengthen bilateral ties. The Ministers appreciated the work done by the Joint Working Groups on Trade, Smart Cities and Technological Collaboration, Advanced Manufacturing & Engineering under the ambit of the JETCO.

3. UK and India are important trading partners. Bilateral trade in merchandise goods between the two countries during year 2016-17 saw US$ 12 billion.

4. During the meeting, Hon’ble CIM observed that both India and the UK cherish the historical ties, shared democratic values and close people-to-people contacts and further looked forward to strengthen the relationship built on these pillars.

5. The Ministers issued a Joint Statement, after the 12th JETCO meeting, which outlined the priorities of the two countries and the vision to attain the same.
