Mr. JM Malhotra, Chairman of Malhotra Group PLC, Appointed as India’s Honorary Consul in Newcastle upon Tyne

Newcastle upon Tyne, 31 August 2024 – Mr. JM "Meenu" Malhotra DL, Chairman of Malhotra Group PLC, one of Northeast England’s most prominent companies, has been appointed as India’s Honorary Consul General in Newcastle upon Tyne.

The formal announcement was made on Friday, 30 August 2024, by Indian High Commissioner Vikram Doraiswami at a ceremony in Newcastle. At this event, attended by government officials, political leaders from the region, leading entrepreneurs, sports personalities, and distinguished representatives from universities, and the Indian diaspora, HC emphasized the High Commission's effort to enhance the bilateral partnership including by reaching out to communities in regions outside the UK's capital city. He highlighted education, research and innovation, trade and investment, and technology-based partnerships as specific areas of potential as focus areas for India in its ties with regions of the UK. 
 
Mr. Malhotra’s appointment marks a significant milestone in the deepening of India-UK relations, including as this will be the first Honorary Consul appointed by India in the region--other Honorary Consuls of India are in Wales and Northern Ireland.

As Honorary Consul General, Mr. Malhotra will play a pivotal role in fostering business partnerships between Northeast England and India, ensuring that the region’s enterprises are well-positioned to engage with India’s dynamic economy.
 
Expressing his sincere gratitude to the Government of India for this honour, Mr. Malhotra reaffirmed his commitment to strengthening ties between Northeast England and India. He emphasized his role as a vital link between the UK and India, stating, “It is a great honour to represent both India and the UK in my new role.”
 
The new Honorary Consulate of India will be headquartered in the historic Parrish’s department store building on Shields Road, Newcastle upon Tyne; a property now owned and refurbished by the Malhotra Group.
